Yeah, and the modern closer usage pattern isn't even good for baseball. It's garbage is what it is, and many players have been overpaid because of this nonsense. Does that still count as innovation?

This is to say nothing of the fact that Sutter "pioneered" the modern closer role because he couldn't handle a heavier workload.

It's a joke that he's in and not Gossage. Either Gossage only, both, or neither. They chose the only permutation that doesn't make any sense.

These people are paid to write about baseball, and many haven't a goddamn clue. It's disgraceful.

Sutter's manager was also the innovator of the one inning closer, so maybe since he's also the trend setter for the modern closer, he gets more recognition then he normally should.

I can't remember where I read it, maybe the Detroit News, but they metioned Sutter was the pitcher who pioneered the split finger and that might be the reason that puts him over the top.

I think the people who vote for the Tony Phillipses of the world aren't serious in their desire to get them into the HOF. They know those players have no shot at getting in. I would guess that they are just trying to give some recognition for whatever reason.

Dale Murphy - two-time MVP, five gold gloves, made the facial mole "cool" again. What the hell is wrong with people that he only gets 10% of the votes?
