Oil Can Boyd Shuts Out Detroit, Red Sox Take Five Game Series

by @ 1:14 am. Filed under 1984 Tigers Championship Diary, Howard Johnson, John Grubb, 1984 Tigers Diary - August, Glenn Abbott

August 8, 1984 Red Sox 8, Tigers 0 (74-41)

An error by third basemen Howard Johnson led to five first inning unearned runs, as Glenn Abbott couldn’t get out of the first inning. Probably the strangest thing about the inning was Abbott struck out Wade Boggs.

Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd threw a complete game seven hitter, as the Tigers couldn’t put a runner across the plate. John Grubb was the only Tiger to figure him out, as he went two for three.
